Introduction
The first gold to be discovered in Australia was in May 1951. Edward Hargraves said he had discovered gold that was worth money near Bathurst, at a place he called Ophir. Edward had been to the goldfields in California and he learned new ways to get gold such as panning and cradling. Edward was offered a reward by both the Colony of New South Wales and the Colony of Victoria. Before the year ended, the gold rush had spread to many other places, not just to the west, but to the north and south of Sydney.
