schooling
Life on the goldfields were hard for children because their parents moved around a lot, looking for new goldfields, children would change schools more often than usual.
It took a while for a new school to be built in a new area, so sometimes there was no schooling for children. This made it hard for children to learn to read and write. When children weren't in school they had to help their parents do household chores such as looking after their siblings, shopping, fetching water up from the creek, gathering firewood, washing clothes, cooking or taking care of horses. Children often helped their parents dig for gold.
